This powerful statement highlights the importance of active listening and empathy. Sometimes, all we need is someone to truly hear us without judgment or interruption. Offering unsolicited advice or invalidating someone’s feelings can indeed be hurtful. Instead, let’s strive to be better listeners and create a safe space for others to express themselves. As a disabled vet and a retired postal worker Keith has a vast amount of experience to draw from that helps him relate on a human level. The most important thing Keith learned during his time at the post office is that violence is the voice of the unheard. Keith seeks to listen first to understand the needs of the individual and assess their unique situation in a safe environment while helping them seek answers to their truth. Keith believes that the answers to what troubles you are inside you, and he is listening. Keith has a BA in Social Work, with a minor in Human Behavior from MSU. He has worked with youth in urban and inner city school settings, as well as with Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), and Substance Use Disorders (SUD) and is well versed in person-centered approaches, positive psychology and motivational Interviewing.
“When I ask you to listen to me and you start giving advice, you have not done what I ask. When I ask you to listen to me and you begin to tell me why I should not feel that way, you are trampling on my feelings.”
I’m Sarah Ortiz, a dedicated counselor intern at Jackson Healing Clinic, where I’m honored to work with individual clients like you.
